Summary
Ghostbusters was released by Sega and created by Compile for the Mega Drive/Genesis on June 29, 1990. It has no connection to the earlier Activision title (although that company's name still shows up on the copyright screen), and instead features a side-scrolling run-and-gun format where the player controls short, cartoonish versions of three of the four Ghostbusters from the film, with the notable omission of Winston Zeddemore. The game begins with four levels; after completing them, a fifth level becomes available, followed by a sixth and final one. Each stage includes a couple (typically two) of mid-bosses referred to as "middle ghosts"; defeating one transforms it into a small green ghost that can be lured into a ghost trap for additional cash. Between stages, players can spend their earnings on upgrades like a three-way firing mode or healing items.
Storyline
The Ghostbusters are struggling with bad luck due to a lack of ghostly action when, all of a sudden, multiple calls start coming in from across the city, including the surprising return of the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man (though dialogue suggests it's not the same one from the film). After each case, they find and collect a fragment of an ancient stone tablet. The three Ghostbusters assemble the enigmatic tablet, unintentionally opening a portal to "the evil world" and unleashing a wave of ghosts. In the end, the Ghostbusters succeed in defeating Janna, the God of Darkness, and recover a magical gem from the evil world. They merge the gem with the tablet to shut the portal and save the city.
