Masters of the Elements is the third installment in the Heroes Chronicles series, coming after Conquest of the Underworld and before Clash of the Dragons. Tarnum transforms into what he despises most—a Wizard—in a desperate attempt to aid the Wizards of Bracada in their mission to save the world from the devastating Elemental Lords.
In *Masters of the Elements*, a ten-thousand-year-old peace among the Elemental Lords of Air, Earth, Water, and Fire collapses. The Ancestors dispatch Tarnum to halt the conflict before it unravels the material world. The sole path to the elemental realms lies in seizing the last remaining Elemental Conflux in Enroth. With the power of Gavin Magnus, the immortal Grand Vizier of Bracada, Tarnum captures the final Conflux and uncovers the location of the Gateway to the Clouds. Upon arriving at the Plane of Air, Tarnum finds that Shalwend, the Lord of Air, has already left his domain. When Shalwend obliterates the Gateway behind Tarnum, he is forced to seek another means of returning home. To do so, Tarnum must master all four elements before he can return to Antagarich. He then journeys to the Plane of Water, where he discovers that Acwalander, the Water Lord, has also abandoned his realm. In the Plane of Earth, Tarnum is stunned to find Reamus—once a wizard who had traveled there 200 years ago—still alive. More astonishingly, only 16 years have passed on the Plane of Earth in that time. Since Gralkor, the Earth Lord, has also left his plane, Tarnum and his forces realize the Elemental Lords are exploiting the time differences between the material world and the planes to establish a foothold before Tarnum can return. While on the Plane of Fire, Reamus and Barsolar (King Magnus’s cousin and Tarnum’s advisor) uncover the existence of the Plane of Magic. Magic is the force that unites the elements, so they understand it will be the key to overcoming the Elemental Lords. After securing the aid of the magic elementals and returning to the Plane of Fire to liberate the Phoenixes enslaved by Pyrannaste, the Lord of Fire, Tarnum leads his army back to the material world. Thirty years have passed in the world since Tarnum’s departure. King Magnus brings a force to support Tarnum. While encamped, Magnus and Tarnum share their pasts. Tarnum learns that one of his Behemoths killed Magnus centuries ago during the battle for Castle Steelhorn, and that Magnus awoke to find himself immortal and eventually became King of Bracada. Tarnum, however, finds Magnus arrogant and self-righteous, and refuses to associate with him. After defeating the Elemental Lords, Tarnum sends his elemental forces back to their planes. He coldly informs Gavin Magnus that the elementals will never return to Antagarich (though they later do in *Armageddon's Blade*), then asks the Magic Elementals to destroy all Confluxes and records of the elemental realms before returning to his life as a Barbarian.
