The World Tree is the fifth installment in the Heroes Chronicles series, coming after Clash of the Dragons and before The Fiery Moon. As a Barbarian, Tarnum protects the World Tree in northeastern Antagarich from wicked Barbarians and Necromancers commanded by the demigod Vorr. This title was offered as a free download for customers who bought any two Heroes Chronicles games.
In The World Tree, Tarnum is visited in his dreams by a voice urging him to "Save the World Tree!" Driven by this message, he journeys hundreds of miles northeast to an ancient cave where he joins the last survivors of a barbarian tribe that once safeguarded it. Lately, necromancers have taken over the cavern, and Tarnum believes the Ancestors have sent him to stop them from destroying the World Tree. Through conversations with five local shamans, he learns that the World Tree is the source of life for all living things, though he still doesn't know its exact location or form. Deeper in the caves, Tarnum discovers a barbarian faction collaborating with the necromancers, claiming to follow Vorr, one of the three Ancestors who has transformed into a war god of the barbarians. Tarnum enters a vibrant cavern, convinced the World Tree must be close. He believes that if he can turn the barbarians away from Vorr, the war god will lose strength. The mortal leader of the barbarian Followers of Vorr, King Targor, rules in the style of Tarnum the Barbarian Tyrant, so Tarnum sends Grumba, his ogre second-in-command, to find the Pendant of Total Recall. This artifact will show Targor the painful memories Tarnum has endured over the centuries since his time as a tyrant, potentially curing Targor's madness. An elven druid named Nilidon, who joins Tarnum, reveals that the tunnel system Tarnum has been exploring is actually the World Tree, known as the Roots of Life. Tarnum retrieves the Pendant of Total Recall, allowing Targor to see the truth of his actions. Targor then turns his forces against Vorr and is killed in the battle. Vorr abandons his plan to destroy the World Tree, and the remaining barbarians eliminate the last of the necromancers. As Tarnum leaves the Roots of Life to continue his search for Vorr, he learns that the World Tree will heal with time.
