Ingress is an augmented reality, GPS-based, massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by Niantic Labs, a Google-affiliated startup, initially for Android devices and later, since July 14, 2014, for Apple's iOS. The game features a detailed science fiction storyline with an ongoing, open-ended narrative. Players create "portals" at locations such as public art, landmarks, and monuments, then connect them to form virtual triangular fields across real-world areas. Advancement in the game is tracked through "mind units" (MUs), representing the number of people nominally under each faction's control, as shown on the Intel Map. The connections between portals can span from just a few feet or meters to miles or even hundreds of kilometers, often involving complex logistical efforts. International links and fields are common, as Ingress has gained a passionate global community in cities around the world, appealing to both younger and older players. For some, the game has become a full-fledged lifestyle, even inspiring tattoos.
