Storyline

The game is set in a world named Legaia, home to humans and creatures known as Seru, which can bond with humans to bestow them with extraordinary abilities. Once in harmony, humans and Seru found their peaceful existence shattered about ten years prior to the game's start, when a mysterious mist spread across the land. This mist corrupted the Seru upon contact, transforming them into monstrous forms that turned on humanity, nearly bringing civilization to its knees. At the game's outset, the few remaining humans have gathered in isolated areas, seeking refuge from the encroaching mist. The story follows Vahn, the reserved protagonist; Noa, a spirited wild child; and Gala, a stern warrior monk, as they set out to awaken ten Genesis Trees across Legaia in a bid to eradicate the malevolent Mist. The trio forms bonds with beings called Ra-Seru, which offer them powers similar to Seru but remain unaffected by the Mist. Their journey takes them across three continents, where they awaken Genesis Trees to clear the Mist from small regions and dismantle Mist Generators responsible for its spread. Along the way, they clash with Songi, Gala's former friend, who has allied with a Seru and is gradually being transformed into a monster. As their journey nears its climax in the ruined city of Conkram, the heroes travel back in time to uncover the Mist’s origins and end it for good. They learn it was engineered as a biological weapon by Prince Cort, Noa's brother and the prince of Conkram. Though they cannot save Conkram or Noa’s parents in the past, returning to the present allows them to destroy the final Mist Generator and defeat Cort. Unbeknownst to them, Cort, before his death, fuses with Juggernaut, a Seru that has grown to colossal size due to the Mist. The heroes return to Vahn’s village, Rim Elm, only to be attacked by Songi and the monstrous Juggernaut, which consumes the entire town and its people. After defeating Songi, the group ventures inside Juggernaut to confront and defeat Cort once more. The game concludes with the destruction of Juggernaut, Cort’s rebirth as a baby (entrusted to Noa’s care), and the full restoration of Rim Elm and its inhabitants.
