The portable versions of LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (the follow-up to LEGO Batman: The Videogame) follow the same narrative as their console counterparts, where Batman and Robin join forces with DC Universe heroes like Superman, Green Lantern, The Flash, and Wonder Woman to rescue Gotham City from the dangerous partnership of The Joker and Lex Luthor. These versions feature 14 levels where players assist the Dynamic Duo (and later the Justice League) in gathering studs, battling foes, and engaging with various objects in an open-world setting similar to the console versions. Once the main story is completed, players can take on extra missions with the Justice League to unlock five additional characters via the Batcomputer. Collecting Minikit pieces grants access to new characters (one per piece), Red Bricks unlock special abilities in the Extras menu, and Sound Bites (a new feature represented by blue musical notes) offer short vocal clips from specific characters. On 3DS and DS systems, the Touch Screen is used to pick characters, access their current abilities, and select who to control at any time (only in Free Play mode), while the main gameplay appears on the Top Screen. In contrast, the PS Vita version displays all action on its single screen. The handheld editions also allow players to save their progress at any point in the current level and return to it anytime from the Load Game menu.
