Loretta is a psychological thriller that casts the player as a complicit observer in the heroine's descent into crime, guiding them through a nightmarish world she has created. The narrative follows a woman grappling with betrayal, her husband's unfaithfulness, troubled relationships, and the complex social dynamics of the 1940s. In terms of concept and style, the game draws inspiration from 20th-century American art, the works of Andrew Wyeth and Edward Hopper, classic film noir from the 1940s and 1950s, suspense films by Alfred Hitchcock, the movie The Reflecting Skin by Philip Ridley, and the novels 1922 by Stephen King and Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov.
It's 1947. Lora and Walter Harris have relocated to a farm that once belonged to Walter's parents. Walter is a struggling writer, and Lora is a stay-at-home wife, both far from successful. The family is facing serious financial trouble. Matters are made worse by the fact that Walter has debts to people in New York. Though he hides this from Lora, she begins to suspect the truth. On top of that, she believes he may be unfaithful. Lora realizes she sacrificed her career, her ambitions, and other chances for a man who has failed her and whom she no longer loves. Now, she's trapped in a lonely, bleak home, barely managing to survive. As she fights to keep up with the loan payments, she discovers that Walter's publisher has taken out a life insurance policy on him. If he were to die, the payout would be $30,000. A dangerous idea takes root in Lora's mind.
