Mega Man Powered Up, referred to as Rockman Rockman in Japan, is a reimagining of the first Mega Man title. It launched globally on the PlayStation Portable in March 2006. It was later included in a package with Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X and was set to be available on the PSP's PlayStation Network. The game was made available on the PlayStation Network in Japan, but a North American release never happened due to technical issues. The title features a chibi-style that was originally planned for the first game but couldn't be implemented back then. The developers aimed to stay true to the original characters' appearances and mechanics. Although it was generally well-received, the game didn't sell well, and plans for a follow-up remake of Mega Man 2, titled Mega Man Powered Up 2, were ultimately canceled.
The inventor Doctor Light designed two humanoid robots with advanced artificial intelligence named Rock and Roll. Later, he built eight additional robots for industrial purposes: Cut Man, Guts Man, Ice Man, Bomb Man, Fire Man, Elec Man, Time Man, and Oil Man. His groundbreaking work earned him a Nobel Prize in Physics. His former colleague and rival, Doctor Wily, became resentful for not receiving recognition for his contributions to the project. Wily discovered a prototype robot built by Doctor Light before Rock and Roll, known as Proto Man, whose energy generator was on the verge of failure. To prolong Proto Man’s life, Wily provided him with a nuclear power source. He then hijacked and reprogrammed the eight industrial robots with the goal of world domination. Rock stepped forward to stop Wily and save his friends, and Dr. Light transformed him into a combat-ready robot, renaming him Mega Man. After defeating each of the eight Robot Masters and restoring them to their original state, Mega Man entered Dr. Wily's fortress and faced him in battle. After defeating Wily, the defeated scientist begged for mercy. Mega Man returned home, where he was welcomed by Dr. Light, Roll, and his friends.
