Metal Gear Online, often shortened to MGO and also referred to as MGO2, was an online multiplayer offshoot of the Metal Gear series. The game was officially revealed at Kojima Productions' 20th Anniversary Celebration for the Metal Gear franchise. Although *Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence* and *Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops* included optional online modes both titled "Metal Gear Online," this version of the online game was first introduced as a standalone title built on the gameplay and world of *Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots*. Later, it was confirmed to be part of *Metal Gear Solid 4*. A separate standalone edition was launched in Japan on July 17, 2008. On June 12, 2012, the servers for *Metal Gear Online 2* were closed, though dedicated fan-run servers have since emerged.
