Neverwinter Nights is a computer game launched in 1991. It was created by Stormfront Studios and published by Strategic Simulations, Inc., and it operated on the MS-DOS platform. It marked the first multiplayer online role-playing game to feature graphical elements and was available on AOL. Neverwinter Nights was designed with gameplay mechanics akin to those found in the Gold Box series. The game begins with the player creating a character. Once the character is set up, the gameplay unfolds on a screen that shows text-based interactions, the names and current conditions of the player's party, and a window displaying graphical representations of the terrain, marked with icons for characters or events. During combat, the interface shifts to a full-screen battle mode, where the player's characters and adversaries are shown as icons that move across the battlefield. Set in the city of Neverwinter and over twenty surrounding regions, the game mirrored other official AD&D Forgotten Realms titles of the era. As an online game, it included extra menus for online functions and introduced features not found in traditional AD&D games, such as the ability to teleport between different regions.
