Summary
NFL 2K is a series of American football video games created by Visual Concepts and released by Sega. Initially, the franchise was available only on Sega's Dreamcast console, as EA Sports had not yet brought its Madden NFL series to the platform. As the flagship "2K" title, it launched a broader line of athletic games, eventually leading to the formation of 2K Sports, a division dedicated to publishing sports titles. When the Dreamcast was retired, the series moved to other sixth-generation systems and became a major rival to the Madden series. Following the competitively priced NFL 2K5, which hurt sales of that year's Madden game, EA secured an exclusivity agreement with the NFL, granting Madden NFL the sole rights to use real team and player names. After losing the NFL license, Visual Concepts briefly returned to football game development with All-Pro Football 2K8, a title featuring fictional teams and real former NFL athletes.
