NHL 2004, created by EA Black Box, is an ice hockey video game that follows NHL 2003 and is seen as a significant milestone in the NHL franchise. The game introduces three top European leagues: Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), Sweden's Elitserien (SEL), and Finland's SM-liiga. This wasn't the first time European teams appeared in an EA game; EA had previously released Elitserien 95 and Elitserien 96 for the Mega Drive in Sweden, as well as Elitserien and SM-liiga 2001 as a PC expansion pack for Sweden and Finland featuring those teams. The rosters of the Elitserien and SM-liiga teams in the game were on par with NHL teams, but in later editions, these league teams were ranked lower than the NHL squads.
