Nosgoth was a free-to-play multiplayer action game created by Psyonix and released by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows via digital platforms. As a spin-off from the Legacy of Kain series of action-adventure titles, it was set in the fictional world of the same name. The game featured a player versus player format where each match was divided into two rounds. Players were divided into teams representing one of two factions: vampires, who focused on close-quarters combat and melee attacks; and humans, who played in a style similar to third-person shooters. After each round, teams would switch sides, and the team with the highest score after both rounds was declared the winner. Announced in June 2013 after online leaks, Nosgoth marked the first new Legacy of Kain-related title in nearly a decade, following the 2003 release of Legacy of Kain: Defiance. Originally planned as part of a single-player project called Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, the game was reimagined and developed independently after Dead Sun was scrapped. When officially unveiled in September 2013, the game faced criticism for straying from the traditional single-player, story-focused approach of the Legacy of Kain series. The closed alpha began in late 2013 with access for registered users, and the open beta started in January 2015, concluding in May 2016. On April 8, 2016, Square Enix Europe announced that Nosgoth's servers would close on May 31, 2016. The game's official forums also ceased operation on June 14, 2016.
Nosgoth delves into an untold chapter of the events in Soul Reaver: the centuries stretching from Raziel's execution to his eventual resurrection, both of which were first shown in the opening of Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. In the wake of the Pillars' collapse and the holy war, the human population of Nosgoth endures a brutal existence under the yoke of slavery and exile, often reduced to mere sustenance in Blood farms. The vampire emperor, Kain, and his Council of six lieutenants rule the heartlands with their respective clans. When Raziel, Kain's first-born lieutenant, betrays his master, Kain sentences him to death in the Lake of the Dead. Soon after, Kain vanishes, leaving the empire behind. With the aid of the Chronoplast, he journeys through time in search of a way to heal the decaying Pillars of Nosgoth and the world itself. Kain's remaining lieutenants attempt to maintain order in the decadent realm, but soon fall into suspicion, conflict, and eventually civil war. Raziel's followers, the Razielim, without their leader, face persecution from other vampire clans. With Kain's authority gone, the clans turn on one another in a series of brutal conflicts. The humans of Nosgoth, sensing the vampires' growing instability and distraction, seize the opportunity to flee the Blood farms and begin rebuilding their own civilization. Over the centuries, the former slaves restore their cities and reclaim lost knowledge, becoming a growing threat to the vampire race. They raise an army and launch a series of devastating assaults on vampire outposts. The warring clans eventually set aside their differences and form a fragile alliance to crush the uprising. A new and brutal war erupts between the two races for control of Nosgoth.
