Summary
Offworld Trading Company is a real-time strategy game where currency, not combat, serves as the player's primary tool. Players guide their growing corporations through fierce economic battles against rival firms vying for supremacy on the Red Planet. Drawing loose inspiration from classics like M.U.L.E., the game challenges players to make strategic decisions about resource acquisition, production and trade of goods, engagement with Mars' underground networks, and the timing and selection of stock purchases. Players face off against up to seven other companies controlled by either AI or human opponents. Victory is achieved when a single player secures all shares of their competitors, gaining total control over Mars' economic landscape.
Storyline
After the Great Collapse, hope faded for most of us on Earth. The asteroids were meant to offer endless resources, but a corrupt monopoly seized their promise. The powerful cling to a system that shields their interests, leaving the rest of us to scavenge for survival. Mars is the final opportunity for those who still believe in a better future. It's time to make your mark. Time to go Offworld. It is the year 2063. The previous generation faced a string of devastating crises, shaking even the most hopeful among us. Earth endured the Great Collapse: a global financial disaster driven by human avarice and a rogue artificial intelligence. There was also the Red Disaster, which left behind failed, government-backed colonies scattered across Mars. In this climate of fear, a powerful Syndicate rose to dominance, claiming sole control over the resource-rich asteroid belt. With vast reserves of rare metals and other valuable materials, the Syndicate became the primary lender to world governments. No one was beyond their reach, and with the return of debtors' prisons, the last free nations of the world knew drastic action was necessary. The key to reigniting the human spirit lay beyond Earth. World governments resolved to establish new colonies on Mars, determined to reclaim their futures from the Syndicate’s exploitative grip. To avoid repeating the mistakes of the past and prevent another Red Disaster, a new approach was needed. A free market built on competition and merit seemed the best path forward. The era of subsidies and automated financial systems was over. Each colony’s success would be earned through economic struggle, with only the most capable ventures surviving. The New Martian Colonies would be contested by a diverse array of individuals, all united by a single, hopeful belief: "This time, we can do it right."
