Summary
Pac-Man 2: The New Adventures, referred to in Japan as Hello! Pac-Man, is a side-scrolling adventure game "follow-up" to the original Pac-Man. Unlike most of its predecessors, which were maze-based, Pac-Man 2 features a mix of simple point-and-click adventure gameplay. Developed and published by Namco, it was released for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and Sega Mega Drive/Genesis on April 6, 1994. The game draws its framework and some features from Pac-Land, and also includes elements from the animated series, such as Pac-Man's family and a primary antagonist leading the ghosts. The Genesis version was only made available in North America and not in Japan or Europe.
Storyline
After an introductory sequence where Pac-Man introduces himself and explains the game's mechanics, the story follows a loosely connected series of misadventures as Pac-Man completes various tasks for his family, all while a group of ghosts and their enigmatic leader conspire to eliminate him. Pac-Man's first mission is to find milk for Pac-Baby, which he successfully obtains from a local farm. Later, Ms. Pac-Man asks him to find a special flower for Lucy, a friend of Pac-Jr's, as a birthday gift. Pac-Man is given a trolley ticket to travel to the mountains, where he hang-glides and evades ghosts and falling rocks in search of the flower. When he finally returns with it, he is disappointed to learn that Lucy's party has already begun and she has already received another gift. Soon after, Pac-Jr arrives home in tears, explaining that his guitar was stolen by ghosts while he was in Pac-City. Pac-Man is given a train ticket to head to the city, where he battles grumpy balloon vendors and irate security guards to recover the guitar. In the final chapter, Pac-Man learns from a news report that the ghosts are stealing ABC gum from children across Pac-City. The Ghost Witch of Netor then takes over the broadcast and dares Pac-Man to confront her and her newly created Gum Monster. Pac-Man journeys through an abandoned factory where the monster is being built. The game reaches its climax in a showdown between Super Pac-Man and the Gum Monster. After defeating the monster, the Ghost Witch and her followers retreat, and Pac-Man is hailed as a hero by the town and his family—though the ABC gum remains missing. Throughout the game, players can guide Pac-Man to one of two video arcades where a version of the original Pac-Man (based on the NES edition but with enhanced 16-bit visuals) is playable. An optional side quest is also available, involving the collection of three missing cartridge pieces. Completing this unlocks a bonus game in the arcades—Ms. Pac-Man in the SNES version, and an exclusive title called Pac-Jr. in the Mega Drive/Genesis version. Pac-Jr. is a graphical and level modification of Ms. Pac-Man, rather than a port of the unauthorized arcade game Jr. Pac-Man. This was due to the fact that a Genesis version of Ms. Pac-Man had already been released, and Namco did not hold the rights to Jr. Pac-Man at the time.
