The game mechanics resemble those of Taito's Violence Fight and SNK's Street Smart. Players must leap, strike, and kick their opponent until their energy bar is depleted. When all three buttons are pressed simultaneously, the character executes a "super move." In Pit-Fighter, the player starts by selecting one of three available fighters, each with unique abilities, speed, and strength. In the arcade version's character selection screen, each player is assigned a color to choose their fighter: blue for player one, red for player two, and yellow for player three. Up to three players can participate at once, though additional AI opponents will join in during any of the game's 15 distinct bouts. Every third round is a special event called a Grudge Match.[1] During a Grudge Match, the player faces a CPU-controlled copy of their own character (if playing solo) or the other human players in a multiplayer session. Being knocked down three times removes a player from the Grudge Match, with the last remaining fighter declared the winner. Losing a Grudge Match doesn't disqualify a player, but the victor earns extra cash rewards. The final showdown, the "Championship Match," pits the player against the enigmatic figure who appears between matches to mock the fighters—the Masked Warrior. If multiple players have reached this stage, they must battle each other to the death until only one remains to challenge the Masked Warrior. Throughout the matches, players may encounter various objects like knives, crates, sticks, motorcycles, and bar stools that can be thrown at either combatant. There's also a power-up called the "power pill." When either player or opponent grabs it, they gain a temporary strength boost and take reduced damage from attacks. At times, the crowd itself becomes a factor in the fight. Two characters, Knife Man (Milt Loper) and Knife Woman (Dianne Bertucci), emerge from the audience and attempt to stab the player with their daggers. These intruders can be defeated with a single hit. Occasionally, a large bearded man with a stick will also appear. If the player knocks him down, they can take the stick and use it against their opponent. The audience will also push any fighter who stumbles into their area and remains there for more than a few seconds. The fighter will then be pushed back into the ring.
