Pokémon Mezastar is an arcade game created by Takara Tomy A.R.T.S. and Marvelous, the same team behind earlier titles like Pokémon Battrio, Pokémon Tretta, and Pokémon Ga-Olé. The game was officially revealed in the May 2020 edition of CoroCoro, which hit shelves on April 15, with further information shared in a press release on August 12. Originally planned for a summer 2020 release in Japan, it was postponed to September 17 because of the COVID-19 outbreak. Pokémon Mezastar features gameplay elements similar to the developers' earlier games and continues the tradition of using physical accessories, specifically tags, to control Pokémon during battles. These battles involve three Pokémon per team and take place across a range of settings. As players progress, they can catch new Pokémon, which are then given out as tags from the arcade machine. Each Pokémon Mezastar unit includes two side-by-side stations that share a large screen. The screen shows the interface for each station individually, using on-screen visuals to simulate the edges of the display during solo play. For cooperative battles, the interface expands to cover both stations simultaneously. While this feature was previously seen in the arcade game Pokémon: Battle Nine, it was once again promoted as a new addition to the Pokémon arcade series.
