Resident Evil was originally set for a Game Boy Color adaptation developed by the British studio HotGen Studios, Ltd. as part of an outsourced project. Scheduled for an Autumn 1999 launch, the game faced multiple delays caused by programming challenges and was eventually scrapped in March 2000. In its place, M4, Ltd. was commissioned to create an entirely new title tailored for the console, which later became Resident Evil: Gaiden.
