Roland Garros French Open is the franchise's sole entry on the Game Boy Color. Rather than a realistic tennis simulation like other versions, the handheld version offers playful 2D visuals and wacky court settings. Overall, the game features eight players and twelve tournaments. At the start, only five players and four tournaments are available, with the rest unlocked by winning matches. The initial tournaments are real-life grand slams: Roland Garros French Open (the only licensed one), the English Open (Wimbledon), the US Championship, and the Australian Cup, played on clay, grass, or turf. Defeating these leads to more bizarre venues, ranging from street and beach matches to outlandish events in the Antarctic or on the moon. Every tournament is single-elimination, beginning at the quarterfinals. Matches follow standard rules and are viewed from a traditional behind-the-player perspective. All characters—players, referees, and spectators—are depicted in a cartoonish style with exaggerated heads. The controls offer a range of moves, including backhand and forehand shots, volleys, and lobs.
