In the not-so-distant future, Psionics walk among us. Their malevolent thoughts ripple through time and space, tainting even the most resilient minds. Players take on the role of Agent Cain, a formidable Psionic operating for a top-tier government organization. As Cain, you seek to perfect your natural psychic “Talents,” such as launching fireballs or conjuring grotesque beasts. However, using these “Talents” drains both Health and Sanity, forcing players to carefully balance power with self-preservation—lest they lose themselves entirely.
Years before the game begins, a world-famous genetic engineer named Doctor Joan Aiken uncovered a method to activate the untapped portion of the human brain using a serum. This serum granted users psychic abilities, or "talents," allowing them to alter their surroundings—such as levitation or conjuring lightning bolts. These talents were grouped into sets known as totems, and each Psionic focused on one, with some even creating their own. Aiken became the originator of the Science totem. At the start of the game, Cain has just been dismissed from the DNPC after an altercation with Priscilla Divine, leader of the Eye of Ra (a militant group opposing the CoT project on ethical grounds) and founder of the Sun totem. He is later rehired and given the mission to infiltrate the Eye of Ra, who are now running a psychic advice line as a cover, and capture Divine.
