Shenmue III is an action-adventure video game and the follow-up to the 2001 title Shenmue II. The story continues with teenage martial artist Ryo Hazuki as he searches for the man who killed his father in 1980s China. In 2015, Yu Suzuki initiated a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to support the development of Shenmue III. The campaign surpassed its initial goal of $2 million USD in less than eight hours. By the time it concluded in July, it had raised more than $6 million, making it the most successful video game crowdfunding project in Kickstarter history.
Shenmue III kicks off on March 21, 1987. Ryo Hazuki has arrived in Guilin, China, on a mission to uncover the truth behind his father’s murder, which points to Lan Di. There, he meets a new traveling ally, Shenhua Ling, who shares a tale from her village that seems to predict the path they are about to take. The adventure continues as Ryo and Shenhua set out on a perilous journey that will lead them deeper into hostile lands and into the heart of an unfolding enigma. Part I: Bailu Village Shenmue III opens in the quiet village of Bailu, nestled in Guilin. Shenhua begins to believe that Lan Di and the Chi You Men may have taken her adoptive father, Yunshen Yuan, explaining his sudden and unexplained vanishing. Her desire to save him aligns with Ryo’s own quest for justice. Ryo and Shenhua uncover a string of attacks on local stonemasons, all in pursuit of the fabled Phoenix Mirror, leaving homes ransacked in their wake. This includes the workshop of stonemason Guowei Xu. With the aid of martial arts master JiuSi Sun, Ryo takes down the ringleader of the thugs, Yanlang. Shenhua interrogates him and discovers that her father and Xu are being held in Niaowu. Ryo and Shenhua also face off against the returning threat of Chai, but Ryo manages to drive him off.
