In the 3DS edition of Sonic Generations, Modern Sonic's playstyle mirrors that of Sonic Rush and the DS version of Sonic Colors. He can use the Boost, slide under barriers, perform wall jumps, and execute the Homing Attack. After completing the second era, Modern Sonic gains the Stomp ability. The levels featuring Modern Sonic make more active use of the 3DS's 3D effect to enhance depth perception, especially when he jumps into the background, though the console versions also support 3D TV compatibility. In the HD version, Modern Sonic can only wall jump off specific panels (like in the DS version of Sonic Colors), but in the 3DS version, he can wall jump on any wall (similar to Sonic Unleashed and the Wii version of Sonic Colors).
The adventure starts with Classic Sonic in Green Hill. After finishing Act 1, a purple vortex suddenly appears in the sky, catching Classic Sonic off guard. From there, the story jumps to the present, where Sonic is invited by Tails to a birthday party. But Sonic arrives early, so Tails asks him to wait. Suddenly, a vortex pulls Tails into it. Sonic leaps in too, only to be "attacked," yet he still manages to enter. He finds himself in a white world and is left wondering what's happening. Modern Sonic saves Tails after restoring Green Hill, and Tails mentions seeing a large city at night and a giant mushroom. So Sonic decides to investigate those locations, with Classic Sonic following along—unbeknownst to Tails, who thinks he's just Modern Sonic.
