Tactical Ops: Assault on Terror is a first-person shooter video game created in 2002 by Kamehan Studios and released by Infogrames under the MicroProse brand. The game is a retail edition of a multiplayer mod of the same name, originally launched by Kamehan Studios in 1999 for Unreal Tournament. It includes team-based missions where two factions, representing Special Forces and terrorists, compete to achieve objectives and eliminate the opposing team. At its launch, Tactical Ops received mixed to average feedback, with reviewers criticizing its resemblance to the original free mod and its lack of unique qualities when compared to other multiplayer first-person shooters.
With gameplay reminiscent of other team-based multiplayer first-person shooters, including its original Unreal Engine predecessor, Unreal Tournament, Tactical Ops offers both single-player and multiplayer rounds where two opposing teams—Special Forces and terrorists—engage in competitive objectives like protecting or rescuing hostages, securing weapons, or planting bombs at designated sites. The game is structured into four-minute deathmatch rounds. If a player is eliminated during a round, they must wait until the round concludes—either by time running out or one team achieving their mission goal—before rejoining. Players earn in-game currency for accomplishments such as defeating enemies, discovering hidden contraband within levels, and completing mission tasks. Between rounds, this money can be spent to purchase new weapons, armor, grenades, and support items like night vision goggles. The single-player campaign includes 30 maps where players face off against AI-controlled bots.
