Target Earth is a futuristic space shooter where Earth is under siege by robotic forces. The main character is a pilot who controls a powerful mech that can walk on planetary surfaces or soar through space. The game features two distinct level types. Surface levels are set on planets and moons, where the mech runs and jumps through side-scrolling environments while battling enemies. Space levels take place in zero gravity, allowing the mech to maneuver freely in all directions. Players can customize their mech with a wide variety of weapons, including machine guns, lasers, and grenades.
It's the year 2201, and advancing technology has given humanity the ability to inhabit any corner of space. Against this futuristic setting, the events of *Target Earth* unfold as a conflict erupts between Earth and its colonies and a mysterious cyborg army emerging from the farthest edges of the cosmos. At the start of the game, little is known about these cybernetic enemies, called the Chron. As the story progresses, it is uncovered that the Chron are the remnants of a doomed space mission (the Outer Space Expeditionary Party) launched by Earth a century ago. The Earth Defense League is formed to protect the planet. Central to their efforts is the Assault Suit—a towering, twelve-foot armored combat unit with formidable battle prowess. You play as Rex, a skilled commander of the Assault Suit Wing and an expert in piloting these powerful machines. The war begins on Ganymede, but soon moves to a variety of locations, including space, Earth itself, and deep within enemy strongholds.
