Storyline

Under a Killing Moon is set in post-World War III San Francisco in December 2042. After the catastrophic nuclear war, many major cities have been reconstructed—New San Francisco is a prime example—while other areas, like Old San Francisco, remain largely unchanged. The war also had another lasting effect: the emergence of two distinct social classes. Some individuals developed a natural immunity to radiation, making them "Norms"—everyone else became Mutants in some form. Relations between these groups have deteriorated, and Norms and Mutants rarely interact peacefully. The Mutants are often confined to the poorer, deteriorating parts of cities like Old San Francisco. Tex Murphy lives on Chandler Avenue in Old San Francisco. Although he is a Norm, all of his friends are Mutants. In Under a Killing Moon, Tex Murphy, a private investigator, is at his lowest point. Recently separated from his wife Sylvia, unemployed, broke, and living in a dilapidated section of Old San Francisco, Tex knows he must turn his life around. He starts looking for work and finds a quick opportunity when he discovers that the pawnshop next to his apartment has been robbed. Tex solves the case swiftly, giving him hope that his fortunes are improving. Then a mysterious woman named Countess Renier, who has heard of Tex's skills, hires him to locate her missing statuette. At first, it seems like a promising case, with the Countess offering Tex more money than he's seen in years. But things quickly take a dark turn when Tex uncovers a doomsday scheme orchestrated by a dangerous cult known as the Brotherhood of Purity.
