Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return is a side-scrolling platform game where the main character, Tomba, follows fixed linear paths until he reaches a junction marked by a flashing arrow above his head. At these points, Tomba can choose to go in either direction the arrow indicates. Certain sections of the game switch to a top-down perspective, giving the player full freedom to explore. The primary objective is to complete all 137 tasks—133 of which are standard, with the remaining four requiring a save file from Tomba 1. These tasks vary from helping a fisherman retrieve his hook to assisting Santa Claus in finding his "sack." Each completed mission rewards the player with "Adventure Points," which can be used to unlock special boxes hidden throughout the game world. As the story unfolds, Tomba can collect outfits that grant unique abilities, such as the flying squirrel suit, which lets him glide over long distances, and the pig suit, which enables communication with friendly pigs. Magical feathers are also scattered across the levels, allowing instant travel to any previously visited location.
A wild young boy named Tomba lives a quiet life in his homeland until his friend Zippo discovers a strange letter meant for Tomba. The letter reveals that Tabby, Tomba's childhood friend, has gone missing. Filled with worry, Tomba plunges into the ocean to find her. Tomba and Zippo arrive at a fishing village where they meet an elderly man named Kainen. From there, they travel to the Coal-Mining Town, where Tabby's home is located, only to find her absent. Gran, a resident of the Coal-Mining Town, tells them he saw Tabby heading to the Kujara Ranch by trolley, but the trolley she took returns empty. A frantic trolley worker confesses that the Evil Pigs captured Tabby after she tried to protect a charm Tomba had given her. Gran explains that the Evil Pigs have placed a curse on the entire continent and gives Tomba a red Pig Bag, which can capture the Flame Pig responsible for the curse on the mines. Tomba journeys across the continent to collect the remaining Pig Bags. He frees the Coal-Mining Town from its fiery blaze by capturing the Evil Flame Pig, ends the Kujara Ranch's endless snow by capturing the Evil Ice Pig, lifts the darkness from the Donglin Forest by capturing the Evil Ghost Pig, breaks the curse on the Circus Town (which had turned its people into pigs) by capturing the Evil Earth Pig, and stops the Water Temple's constant rain by capturing the Evil Water Pig. Once all the Evil Pigs are captured, their leader, the Last Evil Pig, appears before Tomba and lures him to his hideout. Tomba and Zippo find the Last Evil Pig in a subterranean area beneath the Coal-Mining Town, where the pig tries to stop Tomba by freezing time. A climactic battle ensues, ending with the Last Evil Pig's capture, though he vows to return. Tomba and Zippo locate Tabby in the Last Evil Pig's lair and escape the collapsing area on the back of the flying dog Baron. After a celebration at Tabby's home, Kainen appears and rewards Tomba with a monkey suit for completing all possible adventures (a black one if 133 events were completed, or a red one if all 137 were finished). Tomba is then allowed to pilot the local windmill owner's new boat to return home, but he ends up in an accident on the boat's first voyage.
