Summary
Tony Hawk's American Sk8land is the handheld adaptation of American Wasteland, the seventh title in the Tony Hawk's franchise. It marks the first game in the series to appear on the Nintendo DS.
American Sk8land features cel-shaded graphics and was developed by Vicarious Visions, the team behind the earlier Game Boy Advance Tony Hawk titles. The game mirrors its console counterpart, American Wasteland, including the same soundtrack and many of the same environments and characters.
The top screen shows the main action, while the bottom touch screen displays a top-down map of the current skating area, along with icons for executing tricks. The touch screen also allows players to create skateboard art. The DS's capabilities are further utilized through the microphone, enabling players to record custom sound clips for in-game use.
American Sk8land was the first third-party Nintendo DS title to support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, the online service for the system. Players can compete in modes such as Trick Attack, Score Challenge, Combo Mambo, and The Price is Wrong. They can also upload or download graffiti, board art, high scores, and replays to the game's servers, and regularly receive new objectives to complete.
