Summary
Torment: Tides of Numenera takes place in the universe of Monte Cook's new tabletop RPG, Numenera. Torment carries on the thematic tradition of Planescape: Torment, the highly praised 1999 role-playing game that many regard as a benchmark for storytelling in computer RPGs. Through Torment, we're crafting a deep and immersive role-playing experience that delves into the same meaningful, personal themes.
Storyline
Numenera takes place far in the future, after the rise and collapse of innumerable civilizations, leaving Earth in a roughly medieval condition. Most people now live in small, simple communities, surrounded by remnants of an enigmatic past. Scholars of the current era call this time the "Ninth World," believing that eight previous great ages were destroyed or vanished for unknown reasons, leaving behind ruins, strange phenomena, and artifacts. These remnants, known as the "numenera," are the remains of the advanced science and technology of those bygone eras. Many are broken beyond repair, but some still function in ways that defy the understanding of most humans, who often regard them as magical. The main character, known as the Last Castoff, is the final vessel for the consciousness of an ancient man who discovered how to transfer his mind into new bodies, achieving a form of immortality through the use of relics. Unbeknownst to him, each time he abandoned—or "cast off"—his previous host bodies, they awoke with their own consciousness, devoid of memory of their former master or his actions. The deeds of this man, known to some as the Changing God, have drawn the hatred of the "Angel of Entropy," who now seeks to destroy him and all his creations. As one of these "creations," the Last Castoff is also a target of the Angel and must locate their master before both are destroyed. To accomplish this, the protagonist must journey through the Ninth World, uncovering other castoffs, and forming alliances and rivalries along the way. One tool for such exploration is the "Meres"—artifacts that allow their user to take control of other castoffs and experience alternate worlds or dimensions through them. Through these journeys, the Last Castoff will shape the world—leaving behind their Legacy—and seek the answer to the central question of the story: What is the significance of one life?
