Summary

Initially given away for free in the United States with the purchase of a PlayStation 2 Network Adapter at launch (and later re-released at no cost as part of the Greatest Hits package for Twisted Metal: Black), this online edition of the popular vehicular combat game includes all the vehicles and chaos of the original across all 18 stages (covering every full stage and mini-stage from the complete game) of Twisted Metal: Black. The intense cinematic sequences and story mode were omitted from this network-exclusive version (in part to lower the ESRB rating to a T), but the multiplayer modes for online play retain all four game types – deathmatch, last man standing, collector, and manhunt – with the option to enable power relic modifiers. Initially, online play was restricted to just 4 players (2 over 56k connections), and chat features were absent. However, through server updates, the maximum player count was increased to 8 via broadband connections, and a chat feature using a USB keyboard or on-screen input became unlockable by entering a secret code on the lobby screen.

Storyline

Black is on a mission for an unknown individual to find and kill Calypso. The sender remains unseen and the reason behind the mission is never explained. Based on the original Twisted Metal from 1995, Twisted Metal: Black features a much darker storyline and is labeled as an "alternate universe" in comparison to the other Twisted Metal games. This is because the events take place entirely within Needles Kane's mind. But there's more to Twisted Metal: Black. Black, the driver of Manslaughter, first appeared in the 1995 Twisted Metal in Mr. Ash's "lost" ending as the driver of Darkside. In that ending, Mr. Ash is seen trying to reclaim his demon, "Black," leading many to believe Mr. Ash is actually Satan. When Black is returned to him, Calypso becomes furious. This is because Black is sent to kill a more sinister and evil version of Calypso in the "Black" universe.
