Summary

Wild Arms 2 is not a direct follow-up to the original Wild Arms, though it takes place in the same fictional world of Filgaia, a setting that blends Old West, steampunk, and fantasy elements. The game retains the turn-based battle system from its predecessor, where enemies appear at random. It includes character-specific techniques and the Guardian system, which lets players summon powerful beings to aid in combat. Up to three fighters can be used at once in battle, with the option to swap them out for one of up to six reserve characters.

Storyline

A thousand years ago, a terrible catastrophe known as the Blaze of Disaster ravaged the land of Filgaia. The source of this calamity was a demon named Lord Blazer. Many brave warriors rose to confront him, only to fall in battle. It was a young girl, wielding the enchanted sword Argetlahm, who finally stood against him. In a fierce struggle, she succeeded in defeating Lord Blazer, though not by killing him. Instead, she sacrificed her own life to imprison him in a powerful seal. Her name was lost to time, and she became known only as the Sword Magess. In the modern era, Filgaia is a barren and dying world. Vast stretches of land have turned to desert, and the remaining patches of life are slowly vanishing. Ashley Winchester, a soldier stationed near Meria Boule, is thrust into a battle for the world when his unit is caught up in a demon-summoning experiment. The experiment is orchestrated by the dark organization Odessa, supposedly to revive Lord Blazer. As his friends and allies are one by one possessed by demons, Ashley too falls under their influence. After slaying his former comrades, he takes possession of the legendary Argetlahm, which had been brought to the ritual as a relic. Upon touching the sword, he is confronted by both the demon within him—Lord Blazer himself—and the sword's original wielder, the Sword Magess. After temporarily subduing Lord Blazer, Ashley manages to escape back to his hometown of Meria. But Ashley's ordeal is far from over. Soon after, he is approached by a mysterious figure named Irving, who offers him a place in a top-tier fighting unit called "ARMS" (Agile Remote Missions Squad or Awkward Rush and Mission Savers). Accepting the offer, Ashley meets the other two recruits—Lilka Eleniak, a former war hero turned outlaw, and Brad Evans, a young girl training to become a Crest Sorceress. Irving reveals his intentions: to oppose Odessa, which he believes will soon make its full presence known. Together, the three heroes embark on a series of missions that will ultimately determine the fate of Filgaia itself.
