In the GBA edition of Bionicle Heroes, inspired by the LEGO Bionicle series, players assume the roles of the Toa Inika team. The action unfolds on the island of Voya Nui, where the mission is to recover the Mask of Life, which has been taken by the Piraka gang, who also captured the Matoran, the island's local population. Unlike the console and DS versions, this game uses a top-down viewpoint. The game is divided into six island zones, each leading up to a final confrontation. Players begin as a Toa of Fire, but by completing zones and defeating the level boss, they can acquire new masks: Air, Stone, Ice, Earth, and Water. Each Toa is equipped with a primary and secondary weapon that reflects the element of their mask, each with unique traits. Throughout the game, players can also find weapon upgrades. The secondary weapon is powered by an energy gauge that takes time to replenish. Each zone requires a specific Toa form, but in Free Play mode, completed levels can be replayed, allowing players to switch between forms freely to utilize different abilities. Toa can strafe during combat, with an option to either face enemies automatically or control their direction manually.
In Bionicle Heroes, the player's mission to free the island of Voya Nui and its people from the evil Piraka does not align with the official Bionicle storyline.
