Daisenpū is a vertical scrolling shooter developed by Nec Interchannel, based on the arcade title of the same name (also referred to as Twin Hawk), originally published by Toaplan in 1989. Set in the year 193X, the fictional nation of R is under siege by aggressive enemy forces, with the small desert town 'S' becoming a prime target. A few survivors flee into the jungle and begin planning a counteroffensive, but they are quickly discovered and must act fast—launching the Daisenpū squadron before it's fully ready. As the pilot of a fighter jet, the player must dive into enemy-controlled zones, striking ground-based objectives like tanks, anti-air batteries, and warships. Interestingly, the game lacks airborne enemies and environmental hazards beyond enemy fire. The aircraft begins with a basic double-barrel machine gun, which can be enhanced over time by collecting power-pods dropped by small supply trucks. However, the true standout feature of Daisenpū is the ability to summon a six-plane squadron that flies in formation, firing relentlessly and crashing into enemies when destroyed. The squadron can also perform a suicide strike to obliterate ground units or combine forces for a massive bomb attack. Additionally, the game stands out for its seamless gameplay—levels transition without interruption, delivering an unbroken wave of intense aerial combat.
