Dance Dance Revolution 3rdMix, also known as 3rdMix, is the third installment in the Dance Dance Revolution series of rhythm video games. It was launched in arcades by Konami on October 30, 1999. Though officially available only in Japan, machines can be found around the world. The game includes a total of 68 tracks, with 35 of them being brand new to the Dance Dance Revolution series. The gameplay mechanics in 3rdMix remain consistent with earlier titles in the series. However, 3rdMix introduced a completely new scoring system. Unlike the previous two mixes, which focused heavily on combo chains, combos in this version are nearly irrelevant. The highest possible score for a single song is 10,000,000 points, achieved by landing all Perfect hits. Perfects earn twice the points of Greats, and steps near the end of a song are worth more than those at the beginning. In Nonstop mode, multipliers of 2x, 3x, and 4x are applied to the second, third, and fourth songs respectively, meaning a perfect Nonstop run can reach 100,000,000 points. 3rdMix was the first DDR game to introduce different colors for varying beat divisions, as opposed to the standard 4-beat layout. This allowed 1/4, 1/8, 1/12, and 1/16 steps to be visually distinct, helping players better identify rhythm changes. This visual style is known as "vivid" mode, while the older, monochrome arrow style is now called "flat" mode. Flat mode would later appear as an optional setting in subsequent DDR releases. This version was also the first to display lyrics for all songs during gameplay. Arcade operators had the option to enable or disable this feature. While it was removed from later arcade titles, some home versions include it as an option, and most European releases of Dancing Stage have it enabled by default. 3rdMix also introduced character selection, primarily for visual customization. However, the selected character can influence which beatmania remix track becomes available during a single playthrough.
