Unlike most Final Fantasy titles, Dissidia takes the form of a fighting game rather than a traditional role-playing experience. However, it still retains a deep storyline, along with character progression and customization elements. The game brings together key characters from various Final Fantasy games, selecting two from each—typically the hero and the villain. The story centers around the conflict between the two deities, Cosmos and Chaos. The heroes band together to battle through Chaos’s forces and recover their crystals, which are essential for defeating Chaos. Each character has their own unique story path, ending with the collection of a crystal. Dissidia also includes a single fight mode and an arcade mode, allowing players to select their fighter and opponent. In arcade mode, opponents are automatically assigned by the game. Any experience and abilities earned by a character during the campaign are retained across all game modes. For instance, if Cloud reaches level 12 by the end of his campaign, he will retain that level in the character selection screen for Arcade or Quick Battle. Additionally, all items collected during the campaign are owned by the player, meaning they can be transferred between characters. The game also offers extra content like villains, alternate costumes, and more, which can be unlocked using PP points. These points are earned through battles and completed storylines.
