Dynasty Warriors 4 is an action-packed hack and slash video game and the fourth entry in the acclaimed Dynasty Warriors franchise. Developed by Omega Force, the game is inspired by the classic literary work *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* by Luo Guanzhong. As the series has evolved, it has moved further away from the original storyline of the source material, instead offering players greater control over the narrative's direction. Initially launched for the PS2 in March 2003, it was later adapted for the Xbox in September of the same year and, in 2005, released for PC under the title Dynasty Warriors 4 Hyper.
Dynasty Warriors 4 takes place in ancient China during the Three Kingdoms period. The story starts with the decline of the Han Dynasty, just after the death of Emperor Ling, when Zhang Jiao's Yellow Turban Rebellion begins a revolt against the empire. The game incorporates elements from Chinese mythology, blending historical facts with fictional storytelling based on the classic tale Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Many of the settings, characters, and events in Dynasty Warriors 4 are rooted in real Chinese history, though they are often exaggerated for dramatic effect and player engagement. Some aspects, however, are historically incorrect, such as Zhou Tai's use of a Japanese tachi, a weapon with no known historical presence in that time period. The game showcases settings that reflect ancient China and includes various period-appropriate items. Players will encounter common elements like Fairy Wine and Dim Sum throughout the game.
