Dynasty Warriors 3 is the third entry in the Dynasty Warriors series in North America and the second title in the Shin Sangoku Musou series in Japan. It is a spin-off of the video game *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, which is based on a series of books of the same name authored by Luo Guanzhong. The game features both fictional and historical elements from the same period in Chinese history that *Romance of the Three Kingdoms* is set in. It follows the main events of a portion of the story focused on uniting China under the rule of a single kingdom.
Dynasty Warriors 3 takes place in Ancient China during the Three Kingdoms period. The game starts with the collapse of the Han Dynasty, following the death of Emperor Ling, when Zhang Jiao, the leader of the Way of Peace, sparks a rebellion against the Empire. The game blends real history with fictional elements, often amplifying characters and their traits. For instance, Lu Bu is depicted as an almost unstoppable, fierce warrior. Many of the events and levels are inspired by actual occurrences from the Three Kingdoms era, particularly the power struggles between the three main kingdoms: Shu, Wu, and Wei. Each of these kingdoms aimed to dominate the others and bring all of China under their control. While the storyline in Dynasty Warriors isn't entirely historically accurate, it has been adapted to enhance gameplay and avoid monotony. For example, some characters who died during the time the game is set in still appear in later parts of the game. The game includes settings that reflect Ancient China and features items from the era, such as Fairy Wine and Dim Sums. The game also incorporates elements of mysticism, as certain characters like Zhuge Liang, Sima Yi, and Pang Tong possess magical abilities or use entirely magical attacks.
