Summary

Formula One 05 for the PlayStation 2 hit European shelves on July 1, 2005, with an Australian release following later that year. The game carried over the 'Career Mode' feature from Formula One 04, letting players progress through various Formula One teams over a five-year span (though each year repeated the 2005 season). EyeToy: Cameo support was also included, enabling players to insert their own face onto a driver in their profile, though unlike F1 04, custom helmet designs were not an option. The cover stars were Jenson Button, David Coulthard, and Narain Karthikeyan. Players begin by testing for smaller teams such as Minardi, Jordan, and Red Bull Racing (as in F1 04, a generic car is available but only for use in Time Attack mode). Advancement through the grid in the 'career' is determined by strong test performances and solid race results. As in previous versions, consistent underperformance can lead to being let go by the current team. Occasionally, there are 'shoot-out' tests against the team's second or third driver, depending on the player's standing, where both complete five laps each and the driver with the fastest combined time from the best sectors secures the race seat. Players can now view trophies earned for race and championship victories in Career Mode immediately after they are first won. Like F1 04, "classic" cars such as the Williams FW11 are unlocked by meeting specific criteria, such as winning a World Championship. Helmets for Career Mode are also available to unlock, and a hidden track—the Detroit street circuit used for the Detroit Grand Prix and the Paul Ricard circuit in France ([citation needed])—can be accessed in Time Attack Mode. Notably, as the game was developed before the mid-season change in qualifying rules in 2005, it uses the original "aggregated times" format from the early part of the 2005 season in all Race Weekend, Championship, and Career Mode races. Online multiplayer is also a feature. The opening video includes the song "Butterflies & Hurricanes" by the English alternative rock band Muse. After several years of stagnation, fans widely regarded Formula One 05 as a major leap forward for the series and the much-needed revitalization it required. Many had criticized Studio Liverpool for a lack of innovation and progress since the series moved to the PS2. The release of Formula One 05 demonstrated significant improvements in gameplay and AI, showing the studio's commitment to evolving the franchise. That said, some players found the AI too lenient on the highest difficulty and criticized the new penalty system, which reduced engine revs during penalties instead of using the traditional "drive-through" penalties from earlier games. Despite these issues, fans generally agreed that Studio Liverpool had laid a strong foundation for the upcoming 2006 edition. See also[edit]
