Set in an alternate world where Tokyo is overrun by swarms of demons, the game follows a young man living in an underground shelter as he trains to become a demon hunter using specialized programs. During one training session, a program malfunctions, thrusting you into a hostile world where you must battle ruthless demons to survive. Giten Megami Tensei: Tokyo Mokushiroku is a non-canon entry in the Megaten universe, incorporating familiar settings and story motifs from the series. Much like the original Shin Megami Tensei titles, the game centers around 3D dungeon exploration from a first-person viewpoint. The combat system features unique mechanics: enemies are visible before battle starts, and during your journey through the dungeons, you may be ambushed from multiple directions. You must react in real time by turning to face threats, though the action pauses when selecting commands from the menu, following a classic turn-based structure.
In 199X, Tokyo was obliterated by ICBMs, triggering a nuclear apocalypse. Those who had the foresight to construct underground shelters survived the Great Cataclysm, while demons began to overrun the surface. The survivors in the shelters still face the threat of demonic invasion, leading to the formation of an organization known as Devil Busters. Two decades later, a new generation has grown up in the safety of these underground havens... In Giten Megami Tensei, you take on the role of Ayato Katsuragi, a Devil Buster born and raised in the Hatsudai Shelter. Ayato joins the ranks after his parents are brutally slain by demons. He passes the entrance exam alongside his friend Yuuka Tachibana, who is the reincarnation of Ishtar. Soon after, the shelter is attacked, Ayato is taken over by a demon, and Yuuka is killed, her body split into eight parts, each given to one of Ayato's comrades. Ayato manages to escape and vows to retrieve all of Yuuka's pieces. The narrative unfolds in a somewhat episodic manner. Ayato teams up with Rui Asuka, Tatsuya Hayasaka, Emi Kirishima, Yoshio Nishino, Isamu Yamase, Tetsuya Sonoda, Kouki Kamikawa, Kazumi Yamada, Sanshirou Souma, and Doctor Kusaka. Tragically, many of them meet their end at various points in the story.
