.Hack//Outbreak is the third installment in a four-part series that includes .hack//Infection, .hack//Mutation, .hack//Outbreak, and .hack//Quarantine. The games feature a "game within a game" concept, centered around a fictional, offline, massively multiplayer online role-playing game known as The World. Players can carry over their characters and progress across the series. Each title includes a bonus DVD with an episode of .hack//Liminality, an original video animation that explores events happening in parallel with the games. The games are part of the larger multimedia initiative known as Project .hack, which delves into the enigmatic background of The World. Taking place after the events of the anime series .hack//Sign, the story follows a player named Kite as he seeks to uncover the reason behind some users falling into comas after playing The World. His journey soon expands into a more profound inquiry into The World itself and its impact on the Internet's stability.
After exhausting the third Phase, Kite and BlackRose are stunned to discover the Lambda server damaged. Kite runs into Mia, but she's not herself—her usual enthusiasm is gone, and she has no interest in joining him. At Mac Anu, Mistral discloses that she's a pregnant housewife and, despite wanting to see the journey through, can no longer assist Kite. With these setbacks happening all at once, Kite starts to question whether he's on the right path, much to BlackRose's frustration. Still, he presses on, following whatever clues he can find. At Σ Chatting Snaring Twins, Kite ventures into the dungeon alone and retrieves data left behind by Harald. Deep below, he finds Balmung battling a Data Bug by himself. After Kite helps him defeat the creature, the two have a conversation and ultimately decide to team up, recognizing that they need each other’s strength. Balmung then guides Kite further in, leading him into another white room filled with hundreds of fluttering butterflies.
