Gothic 3 is a fantasy-based role-playing game for Windows developed by the German studio Piranha Bytes. It serves as a follow-up to Gothic II. While it is widely accessible in English, the game was originally released in German. The European Union saw its launch on October 13, 2006, with North American players gaining access starting November 20, 2006. The North American version includes two patches that were introduced following the initial UK release. A Collector's Edition was also made available, featuring additional collectible content. JoWooD later published a standalone expansion titled Gothic 3: Forsaken Gods on November 21, 2008.
The third installment begins with the Nameless Hero and his companions setting sail for a new continent teeming with orcs, arriving in Myrtana, the heart of the land. The hero lost all his belongings from the previous game when his ship was taken while he was on land with Milten, Diego, Gorn, and Lester. This event is likely the cause of the orc invasion that struck Khorinis in the second chapter. These lands are physically separate from Khorinis and the ruins of the penal colony. In the rugged forests of this continent, the orcs have subjugated the human kingdom, with only a handful of free humans surviving in the harsh, icy north of Nordmar and the arid desert of Varant in the south. The hero must choose between supporting the rebellion and remaining loyal to the deposed human king, aiding the orcish rulers in their campaign to destroy the last human stronghold, or pursuing a course that serves his own interests. Along the way, he is joined by several NPCs, some of whom are familiar faces. While the chapter brings back characters from the previous game (Xardas, Diego, Milten, Gorn, Lester, Lee, and Vatras), it also introduces two new key figures: King Rhobar the Second (who was ultimately responsible for sending the Nameless Hero to the penal colony in the first game) and Zuben. Though the king once enjoyed a reputation as a courageous leader, he now faces near defeat and fading glory. Zuben commands the Hashishin who dwell in the southern region of Varant.
