The goal of the game is to descend into a dungeon to claim the Amulet of Yendor while accumulating as many points as possible before your demise. The player can begin with a variety of character classes, such as Wizard or Cave(wo)man. Along the way, you'll face a wide array of creatures, including hobgoblins, leprechauns, acid blobs, bats, centaurs, chameleons, dragons, ghosts, imps, and trolls. To survive, you have access to weapons, armor, potions, wands, rings, and other unique items. For example, fire-related elements include a scroll, a ring, a monster, and a wand, and how they interact is part of the game's discovery. Time is a factor, as starvation leads to death, and food supplies are limited and scattered throughout the dungeon. There's also a weight limit on what you can carry, meaning you must sometimes abandon valuable items. The gold and gems you possess when you die contribute to your score, but they also add to your burden. To obtain the Amulet, the player must venture into Hell, a perilous journey that can easily end in disaster for the unprepared. (In NetHack, this realm has been renamed.) Throughout the dungeon, the player will discover special areas like shops, crypts, and vaults. Other environmental hazards include traps and swamps. As you gain experience, your skills and score improve, but so does your need for food. Acquiring the Amulet alone doesn't ensure a top score, as it is simply a highly valuable gem among many.
