The player assumes the identity of a young shepherd who stumbles upon and searches a freshly deceased body during their first visit to the city, seizing a black disk, a bracelet, and a leather scroll. The Galactic Museum then appears before the player after obtaining these objects. The player discovers that by collecting these items, they have become the latest in a long line of adventurers seeking to destroy the Wizard's Compendium—the very leather scroll the player now possesses. The museum features multiple display cases that can only be opened by inserting unique coins of different kinds. Some of these coins can be purchased through chance encounters with NPCs, others are dropped as rewards after battles, and a few can only be found in the deepest parts of various dungeons, blocking the player's progress until those challenges are completed. In contrast to many RPGs, the game does not rely on an experience point system. Instead, the player advances in level solely by completing quests successfully. The game primarily uses a top-down perspective for world maps, towns, and castles, but shifts to a 3D perspective within the dungeons and the museum. Numerous parts of the game, such as games in town squares and specific museum exhibits, offer mini-games that, when completed successfully, provide permanent boosts to the character's attributes. Additionally, various casinos scattered throughout the towns allow players to gamble for cash. It is also possible to commit bank robberies in cities, though doing so draws the attention of the local guards, who will continue to recognize the player until they leave the town and enter a new one.
