Storyline
On Juliet Starling’s 18th birthday, she heads to San Romero High School park to meet her boyfriend, Nick Carlyle, who is set to meet her family for the first time. However, a zombie outbreak erupts, forcing Juliet to battle waves of the Undead on her way to Nick. When she arrives, she finds Nick fending off a zombie that was about to attack her, and in the process, he is bitten in her place. Knowing he will soon turn, Juliet makes the painful decision to decapitate him to save his life. When Nick awakens, he is shocked to find himself still alive—despite being a headless head. Juliet explains that she is a zombie hunter and performed a magical ritual to preserve his soul and humanity, which is why he remains conscious. She attaches his head to her belt and continues her journey through hordes of zombies to meet her mentor, Morikawa. Once they reunite, Morikawa explains the situation: the universe is split into three realms—Earth, the Land Beyond Words, and the Rotten World, a hellish dimension home to demons and the Undead. Morikawa reveals that a portal between Earth and the Rotten World has been opened using black magic and explosives, and he sets out to find the one responsible. Juliet and Nick later reunite with Morikawa after fending off zombies trying to destroy them, and they discover the culprit behind the outbreak: an evil goth named Swan. Though Juliet confronts him, she is unable to stop him from summoning five demons that manifest as rock-and-roll-themed zombies. Morikawa tries to stop Swan but is mortally wounded. Swan sends the first zombie overlord, Zed, after Juliet, but she defeats him and sends him back to the Rotten World. Before dying, Morikawa instructs Juliet to purify the school and destroy the remaining four overlords. Juliet tracks them down with guidance from her sisters, Cordelia Starling, the older one, and Rosalind Starling, the younger. As she explores the school and fights zombies, she faces Vikke, the second overlord, in a duel on his airborne ship, defeating him and sending him back to the Rotten World. The ship crashes at the O'Bannon Farm. Juliet then battles nightmares conjured by Mariska, the Queen of Psychedelia, but she overcomes them and defeats Mariska in a direct confrontation. Juliet’s father, Gideon, arrives and takes her back to the city, where she, Nick, and Gideon infiltrate the Fulci Fun Center, now overrun with gamer zombies. Josey, the overlord in charge, challenges Juliet in his lair, and she defeats him as well. With one overlord remaining, Juliet and her family infiltrate an unfinished cathedral in the city, where the final overlord, Lewis Legend, awaits. Swan mocks Juliet, claiming Lewis will be her toughest opponent, but she turns the tide and defeats him. Like the others, Lewis utters a Latin chant as he dies. Swan then appears, applauding Juliet’s efforts, and reveals the truth: she was just a pawn in his twisted game. He orchestrated the deaths of the overlords to unleash the ultimate zombie, Killabilly. Swan also confesses that Juliet and the other students tormented and bullied him, turning him into a monster. (Flashbacks suggest he may have once loved Juliet, and her relationship with Nick pushed him further into darkness.) The outbreak was his revenge against the school and society for making him an outcast. Juliet tries to reason with him, but Swan remains unrepentant and shoots his own head off to complete the ritual. He is then absorbed into a black vortex, which solidifies into Killabilly, the ultimate Undead, who Juliet must now fight. During the battle, Juliet is aided by the ghost of Morikawa and Nick. Halfway through, Gideon crashes his motorcycle, loaded with explosives, into Killabilly’s mouth, seemingly sacrificing himself. Juliet mourns, but Nick and Morikawa urge her to enter Killabilly’s mouth before he regenerates. Inside, she finds Swan’s headless body and learns she must place Nick’s head on it to trigger an explosion. After a tearful goodbye, Nick sacrifices himself, and Killabilly explodes. In a near-death moment, Nick is told by Morikawa’s ghost that his bravery has earned him a second life, though with a “mix-up”—he will be reborn in Morikawa’s body, which is much shorter than his original. Neither he nor Juliet cares. It is later revealed that Gideon survived the explosion, and the Starling family returns home for Juliet’s birthday, which can be a happy or tragic event depending on the player’s choices. If the player saves everyone during the game, Juliet’s birthday is a joyful celebration, and Nick gives her a gift of luxury lollipops. But if one or more people die, Juliet’s mother behaves oddly and turns around to reveal she has been zombified.
