Medarot, also known as Medarot 1, is an RPG that launched in 1997 for the Nintendo Game Boy and served as the foundation for the Medarot series. It features Hikaru Agata on a journey to participate in Robottle battles and take down the sinister Roborobo Gang. Similar to other monster-gathering games from that era, Medarot 1 was released in two distinct versions: Kabuto (Rhinoceros beetle), where players begin with the Metal Beetle Medarot, and Kuwagata (Stag beetle), where the starting Medarot is Head Scissors. Certain Medarots and Medals are exclusive to each version. The game was never officially translated or released in English. As a monochrome Game Boy title, Medarot 1 only supports basic palette changes when played on a Game Boy Color. However, it displays a border and enhanced color effects when used with a Super Game Boy. A revised version of the game called Medarot Perfect Edition was later released in 1999 for Bandai’s Japan-exclusive Wonderswan system. This "director's cut" also came in two versions and remained monochrome. That same year, the direct follow-up, Medarot 2, was launched for the Game Boy.
