Medarot (also known as Medarot 1) is a role-playing game that launched in 1997 for the Nintendo Game Boy and served as the foundation for the Medarot series. It centers on Hikaru Agata as he embarks on a journey to take part in Robottle battles and challenge the nefarious Roborobo Gang. Similar to other monster-gathering games from that era, Medarot 1 was released in two distinct versions: Kabuto (Rhinoceros beetle), where players begin with the Metal Beetle Medarot, and Kuwagata (Stag beetle), where the starting Medarot is Head Scissors. Each version features exclusive Medarots and Medals that can only be found in that specific edition. The game was never officially released in English. Medarot 1 is a black-and-white Game Boy title with minimal palette enhancements when played on a Game Boy Color. However, when used with a Super Game Boy, it displays a colored border and slightly improved visuals. A "director's cut" version titled Medarot Perfect Edition was later released in 1999 for Bandai's Wonderswan, a console exclusive to Japan. This edition also had two versions and remained monochrome. That same year, the direct follow-up, Medarot 2, was launched for the Game Boy.
