SegaSonic the Hedgehog is an isometric platformer featuring three characters who share the same controls and abilities. Each character is operated using a single action button that allows the player to perform a spin jump, and a trackball used to move the characters. The trackballs and action buttons are color-coded: blue for Sonic, red for Mighty, and yellow for Ray. The goal of the game is to reach the end of an isometric course without being defeated. This objective is similar to other titles in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, but the gameplay is distinct in that it focuses entirely on sprinting through a linear path at high speed, dodging a constant stream of hazards such as massive boulders, lava flows, rogue gears, falling stalactites, and various traps. If a player is struck by an obstacle or hazard, they lose health from the Health Gauge, which can be restored by collecting Rings scattered throughout the level. After completing each stage, the game counts how many Rings were collected, and bonus points are awarded if more than half of the available Rings were gathered. The game features only a handful of enemies and a single boss that appears halfway through. At the end of the final level, the player must escape a collapsing tower within twenty seconds. Failing to do so results in an immediate Game Over.
Sonic Ray and Mighty have been captured by the sinister Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik who used his massive tank-like vehicle to seize them. He imprisons them on Eggman Island a dangerous location filled with deadly traps and obstacles that can be activated at the push of a button. Sonic Ray and Mighty join forces to escape the island as the team must overcome the island's many perils and make their way to Eggman's Tower. When they reach the control room Eggman hits a button initiating a self-destruct sequence that will obliterate the entire island. The trio manages to escape just in time before the explosion. The villainous doctor also flees but ends up plunging into the ocean when his Egg Mobile runs out of fuel.
