The Street Fighter EX combat system builds upon the mechanics found in Street Fighter II and the Street Fighter Alpha series. While it retains much of the traditional 2D fighting game feel, the battlefield introduces dynamic shifts in a 3D environment, altering the linear space where characters engage. The game incorporates signature special moves and super combos that are either familiar or reminiscent of earlier titles in the franchise. Much like in Alpha and Darkstalkers, the super combo meter, used to execute Super Combos and similar techniques, is split into three distinct levels. Street Fighter EX also brings in several new elements designed to expand the player's tactical options. It was later succeeded by an enhanced arcade edition known as Street Fighter EX Plus, and a PlayStation-exclusive home version called Street Fighter EX Plus α, both launched in 1997.
