The Age of Decadence is a forthcoming pseudo-isometric 3D turn-based role-playing game developed by Iron Tower Studio for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Created under the pseudonym "Vince D. Weller," the game is set in a low-magic, post-apocalyptic world drawing inspiration from the collapse of the Roman Empire. The Age of Decadence seeks to revive the classic RPG experience by focusing on meaningful choices and their consequences, offering a deep array of skills, multiple approaches to quests, and richly detailed dialogue options.
The narrative of *The Age of Decadence* delves into multiple themes: the perils of a world after collapse, the fragile boundary between history and legend, and the struggle for power among rival political groups. As recorded in the Imperial Scrolls, the tyrannical kingdom of Q'antaar and the Empire were embroiled in a brutal magical conflict that left much of the world in ruins. Both sides invoked forces of magic and divinity, summoning deities and otherworldly entities whose clash ultimately led to the downfall of both. The Empire’s once-majestic cities were reduced to rubble, and the land was littered with the remains of the fallen. Centuries have passed, yet the world remains scarred by the fall of civilization. Where unity once existed, now there are only factions vying for control in a broken world. Where knowledge once thrived, now there is a lack of understanding in both science and sorcery. Where honor and chivalry once reigned, now there is only selfishness and treachery. It is within this fractured and mythic land that the player uncovers an ancient map hinting at the Empire’s hidden past. The player’s character plays a direct role in shaping the story of *AoD*, which unfolds in a non-linear fashion. The world evolves in response to the player’s decisions. Players can align with one of seven factions, manipulate them against each other, or reject all and forge their own path. The game is said to offer seven distinct endings, only two of which conclude with direct combat.
