Top Gun: Firestorm was created by Fluid Studios and released by Titus Interactive in 2001 for the Game Boy Color, with a version for Game Boy Advance following the next year. It is an isometric flight action game featuring a series of missions for players to complete. In Top Gun: Firestorm, players return to the skies for twelve missions, battling a variety of airborne and ground-based enemies to secure victory. Piloting an F-14 Tomcat, the player navigates an isometric battlefield, completing multiple objectives in each mission. To accomplish these, four different weapons are available—machine gun, bombs, rockets, and missiles. The gameplay bears a resemblance to the Strike series.
The story is only loosely inspired by the film of the same name. The player takes control of the iconic pilot Maverick as he completes a series of realistic training exercises to earn his graduation from Top Gun. The narrative progresses through a series of still images displayed throughout the game.
