As the game begins, your group of heroes has just secured a major triumph against the wicked Zhentarium forces in the ancient city of Ascore. Yet, unrest still plagues the region. Far to the southeast, the dwarves of Llorkh are struggling to survive as they wage a rebellion against their Zhentarim oppressors. The dark-robed legions of evil are striking back with great intensity, determined to maintain the last Zhentarim stronghold in the Savage Frontier.
A short time after the events of *Gateway to the Savage Frontier*, the sorcerer Amelior Aminitas uses magic to call upon the party—now known as the "Heroes of Ascore"—to purge the last remnants of the Zhentarim from the dwarven city of Llorkh. Following this, the group is assigned what seems to be a straightforward task: to guard the envoys of the "Lord's Alliance," a coalition uniting the frontier's various cities. But when the envoys are captured, the Zhentarim, along with their partners the Kraken Society and the Hosttower of the Arcane, conspire to shatter the alliance and seize control of the region. Worse still, the party is falsely accused of betrayal. A large portion of the game focuses on the players' efforts to restore their reputations—typically by completing a mission in each of the Lord's Alliance cities—and to warn the alliance's leaders about the conspiracy. The final mission, which may not directly tie into the main storyline, requires the party to recover a hoard guarded by a dragon. To reveal the full extent of the enemy's scheme, the player must gather two distinct sets of items: Crystals in three different colors, each held by one of the three opposing factions (the Zhentarim, the Kraken, and the Hosttower). These can only be obtained by strategically choosing and defeating specific enemies in the correct sequence during combat. "Lucky papers" from each city in the game. Though presented as simple charms for good fortune, when paired with the crystals, they reveal the complete details of the enemy's plan.
